What is ISO 53800?

ISO 53800 provides guidelines for organizations to promote and implement gender equality and women's empowerment. It focuses on overcoming the inequality arising from gender-specific roles and is applicable to all organizations, regardless of their size, location, or field of activity.

Why is ISO 53800 important?

This standard is crucial for addressing systemic gender inequalities and discrimination in various spheres, including the workplace. It aims to foster a culture of gender equality, benefiting everyone and contributing to sustainable, people-centered development.

  • Promotes a comprehensive understanding and implementation of gender equality
  • Supports the creation of inclusive and equitable organizational cultures
  • Encourages gender equality as a fundamental human rights issue
  • Aids organizations in fulfilling legal obligations regarding gender equality

All types of organizations seeking to actively promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.

While focusing on women, it also addresses gender-based discrimination affecting men and boys, especially when they diverge from typical masculinity roles.

It complements other instruments and initiatives, promoting a common understanding of gender equality issues.

According to the definition in ISO 53800, gender equality is reached when people enjoy the same rights, autonomy, responsibility, participation and visibility in all areas of public and private life, whatever gender they belong to.

Gender equality is crucial for social responsibility and sustainable development. A fairer society where everyone has equal opportunities to participate, contribute economically, and care for their families, leads to improved productivity, decision-making, and overall well-being. Diverse teams perform better and find more innovative solutions, so organizations that champion gender equality in the workplace benefit from enhanced operational efficiency as well as reputational gains.
